NC15 or NW15?! How to pick the correct shade of foundation at MAC...

Unfortunately for me I am able to write this blog post, unfortunate because I have tried and tested resulting in some major foundation 'tide lines' ah we've all been there! So I want to help all you gals or guys out there so you don't have the same problemo - just too nice arn't I.

So when it comes to picking ANY foundation not just MAC you need to work out what colour undertone your skin has, this has nothing to do with what shade of foundation you are, this is whether you have a Pink undertone or a Yellow undertone. To work out your undertone there are a number of things you can do, first of just have a look at yourself in a mirror with no make up on, you'll be able to see if you have a more Pinky tone to your skin or a Yellow tone, I don't mean full on pink just a hint of one or the other. Don't worry If you can't tell and it's not obvious that just means you probably have a neutral undertone which is just a mix between Pink and Yellow. If you have a neutral undertone the best way to work out what colour undertone foundation to go for is with your jewellery, do you suit Silver or Gold more? If you suit Silver more and it brings life to your face then you should go for a pink undertone foundation and if you suit Gold then you should go for a Yellow undertone foundation. Another way is to go off the colour of your veins, if you have blue veins then your a pink undestone and if there Green then your Yellow, my veins personally are Purple and Green so I always go for a Yellow undertone foundation. Don't be fooled that you have to have a darker more tanned skin colour to have a Yellow undertone, I'm pale and I have a Yellow undertone, yes it's harder to find pale Yellow undertone foundations but that's why Mac and other high end foundations are good due to there wide variety of colours, where drug store foundations don't always have a lot of colours and undertones to pick from. So to narrow that down a litte, Yellow undertone skin = Yellow undertone Foundation, Pink undertone skin = Pink undertone foundation and like I said before it's not a obvious Pink or Yellow just a subtle undertone.

Now to MAC, living in my tiny town we don't have a MAC store and the nearest MAC counter is in Manchester so I have had to work it out for myself. I have been to MAC and got 'matched' but she matched me with the total wrong colour, she matched me with a Pink undertone foundation when I am a Yellow but you know what it's like in them stores, you think they have to be right and I always feel soooooo uncomfortable at the counters I just agreed but getting home and using the foundation to find it was the complete wrong undertone was just a ball ache, especially when these foundations arn't cheap!

So, NW or NC?!

At Mac they have NW then what ever shade and NC and what ever shade. NC stands for Cool which are the Yellow undertone foundations and NW stands for Warm which are the Pink undertones. I hope people are following this ha. As you can see in the picture above there is a massive difference between the two considering there is only two shades difference between them. The NW18 is the colour I was matched with in the store and as you can see is not my colour, I could 100% wear a NC18 but because of the Pink undertone of the NW it looks far to orange on my skin, where as the NC15 matches me perfect because of the Yellow undertone. Once you decided whether you are a NW or a NC then you can pick your number, obviously the lower the number the lighter the shade of foundation. Never just think oh I'm super pale so I'll just go for the first one.

Just another example just to show you the difference, below are the same SHADE of foundation but in the two different undertones, you can see how the NW is more pink!

So to sum up -

  • Determine your skins undertone, Yellow or Pink?
  • NC = Yellow
  • NW = Pink
  • Pick your shade

Bish Bash Bosh your good to go! Hope this helps :D

  2. Wow, thank you! I've always been a bit baffled by the MAC shades and how they work. And how people can work out your shade just by looking at you like some kind of black magic, haha. I now know that i'm a DEFINITE NC Thank you! Lilie xx

  4. I would say NC15 It looks more natural the other one looks like it will give of an orange effect which is not a good look if your skin is light :-) My skin is very pale and the NC15 would just be perfect for my complexion so after seeing these pictures I am going to try it out :D thanks for sharing xx

  7. great post..people always forget about their undertone which determines a lot when it comes to makeup. For pale skin, the under tone is normally pink, I did a post on LUSH makeup. I find their foundation the perfect shade for fair skin but I also have MAC NW20 for going out

  14. i went to mac the other week to get some foundation and I normally wear nars mont blanc which is a perfect match but needed some and couldn't wait to order it online, i have pink undertones so the guy matched me up as nw25 at first (WAY TOO DARK) so we went down a few shades but then eventually nc15 ended up being a perfect match and the nw15 wasn't, why when I have pink undertones would the NC colour work better??

    1. Would you say only have pink undertones on your face or all over? If your face is more pink than the rest of your body the NC will match better to cancel the pinkyness in your skin out :) NW always look darker as well because of the warmth in them so if you have super pale skin the NC will work cos it looks lighter then NW.. Every body is different so it's a good job you have a local Mac :)

  15. I just came across this post and you were doing well until you got to the last paragraph. You said NC stands for cool and has the yellow undertones and NW stands for warm and has pink undertones. I must correct you as you are actually mistaken. A cool undertone has more pink to it while the warm undertone is more yellow. The NC and NW in MAC's color theory actually mean neutralize cool and nuetralize warm respectively, which is the reason it can prove to be confusing. So NC - warm/yellow and NW - cool/pink

    1. Well, normally the other brands aare just like you said: NC - Cool/Pink and NW - Warm/Yellow. But MAC is different, their products are opposite. At first I thought like you and almost buy MAC concealer NW15. Luckily I did some research and found this page. I ended up buying NC15 instead and it suits me perfectly well. And I'm Asian, who has yellow skintone.

  19. An interesting read, thankyou!!!... although I was informed..by a lovely Mac employee, in Florida.. if you are pink toned.. go for yellow.. and yellow toned go for pink!! To 'neutralise' :)

  20. The very same thing happened to me! I went to a MAC store and was matched to NW18 but I"m pale and it's way too orangey for me. I didn't want to take it back and tell them they were all wrong... thinking that they knew what they were talking about. But after blending and blending... this is just not working out. I'm definitely a NC.

  22. I had the same experience! went in mac London and they matched me nc15 when clear as day I'm nw15, I mean pale eyes pale pale skin and dark hair hair obvs a cool 'winter'. On film sets ive been made up with nw15. The mac artists don't always get it right, it looked OK though. The second mac store tried putting violent neon pink on me wtf… film and fashion make up professionals are a lot better in seeing your true skin tone.

  23. i have pink undertones, i thought i was an nc, but i was so wrong, didnt look good at all, made me ghostly pale, i looked like i was sick, but when i use nw my skin looked healthy, i now use estee lauder double wear in fresco 2c3, looks great, i think that it is nw 20 or 25 in mac, i have light skin color, green eyes, brown hair

  24. I went to a Mac counter recently asked repeatedly to try an NC15 because all pink undertone just look wrong on me. The girl flat out refused to even let me try an NC, said I was pale therefore had to be NW. She was very olive skinned herself and I don't think she understood where I was coming from at all.

  25. I'm fair skin and wore NC 15 for years and it never looked right. There seems to be some kind of supply issue with their NW10, but if you can get it and try it-it's a life changer. At least on my skin the NC15 was too dark and the NW10 is perfect for me. At least look at it, when its available and stock up if you like it!

Im super pale and so is my sister...she always finds a perfect colour match in the drugstore, whether as I constantly have trouble finding the right shade and usually have to go high end, your post has made me realise its probably because im a yellow and my sister is a pink right? There should be way MORE pale yellow foundations in the drug store as most are too orangey! Personally i havent found mac make up artists to be good at all lol

  27. Wow thanks for this! I was wondering for my own blog on how I would explain MAC foundations colouring system and this seems to be the simplest way to do it!
